DIY Candle Recycling

Thanks to Pinterest, I now have lots of DIY projects that I could easily spend hours upon hours on! Today the boys took an extra long nap so I decided to do one of these new-found projects. This was rather easy, but needed my full attention and lots of patience. I would not suggest doing this while your children are running around the house competing for your attention (that usually happens while I am at the stove).

I started by gathering some old candles that were almost completely melted down. I chose scents that blended well together: merlot, cinnamon pumpkin, and harvest wreath. I did not use the little tea lights after all that were in this picture.

I bought some new wicks from Michael's and made sure I had a strong glass jar to transfer everything into. I used a large Mason jar because I just like the way they look! You will need either wax putty or some sort of glue to adhere the metal plate on the bottom of the wick to the bottom of the jar.

I started off by boiling a pot of water and placing one candle in. It took about 10 minutes to melt down.

Then I poured the wax into the new jar. I had to use a fork to block the bottom of the jar as I was pouring so the wick wouldn't fall into the new jar. Then I had to wait about 30 minutes until the wax was cool before I could melt the next candle to pour in. I also wrapped the top of the wick around an ink pen and rested it across the opening of the mason jar so the wick would stay centered (not pictured here).

Once all the layers were in and cooled I cut the wick. I love the new look, and I also love how our house smells now after 2 hours of candle melting! The only thing I would have done differently was flip the top two layers of the jar since the orange would have looked better in between the reds. But either way, it still smells fabulous :)

Happy candle making!
