James Elliot

"He is no fool who gives up what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose" - Jim Elliot

If any of you have ever received an email from Shaun's personal gmail, you have seen that every email has the above quote as a signature. Shaun's hero is the martyred missionary Jim Elliot. I remember when we were dating Shaun was very passionate about talking about Jim Elliot's life, as well as other similar stories through The Voice of the Martyrs.

I had not heard of the Elliots' story until I was in college and read a few books by Elisabeth Elliot. Little did I know that my mom and her parents were friends with the Shepard family, who's son Walt eventually married Jim Elliot's daughter Valerie.

We want all of our children to have significance behind their names. David Mark means "Beloved Warrior," and those are two traits we want David to believe about himself throughout his life. King David was loved by God and considered to be "a man after His own heart." David's warrior-like character was surely seen when he killed Goliath.

Shaun and I have officially decided that we will name baby boy #2 James Elliot. James means "Supplanter" or "To Follow." Elliot is the Greek form of the name Elijah which means "My God is Jehovah" or "God on High." So James Elliot will mean "To Follow God on High," which is ultimately what Jim Elliot did with his life! I don't believe that was a concidence.

We didn't plan for this, but both of our sons will also be named after kings...King David and King James!

Here is the latest picture of our little James. Today he is 18 weeks, 3 days old and weighs 9 ounces. We can't wait for his arrival!
